Having fallen into recruitment after university (didn’t everyone?!), Mike spent nearly four years at Google building out highly technical engineering teams in remote locations before making the switch to the startup world. Having worked at progressively smaller organizations, Mike is currently Director of Talent Acquisition at Opencare where he has focused the Talent Acquisition team on solving business problems, not making hires. This has allowed the company to grow from 22 to 80+ in under two years, whilst continually prioritizing a healthy culture based on transparency, rapid iteration and open discussion.
Mike believes that the secret to effective recruitment is to be honest, both internally and externally, about the needs of the business and to hire someone who has the passion and curiosity to solve the challenges that the role encompasses. There are no “rockstars,” “ninjas,” “unicorns” or “purple squirrels.” Rather, those folks who exceed expectations stem from a match between a clearly laid-out set of problems that a role needs to solve and a person who has a passion for solving them.
