Is E101 a free course?

Yes, E101 is a completely free course and anyone can register.

How is the course structured?

E101 is a five-week online course made up of five units. Each unit will go live at 10:00 a.m. EST on the Monday of each week. Learners will have until 12:00 a.m. EST on the following Sunday to complete the unit. Each unit should take between three and four hours to complete, which includes time for viewing the material, completing the related activities, engaging in group discussions and participating in the scheduled webinars.

Does the course feature any live events?

No. However, in the past we have hosted a live question-and-answer webinar related to that week’s unit led by an expert which are still available as mp3 files in the course’s Google Drive folder. From time-to-time we will try to hold Q&A’s via the cohort Slack channel.

Are there opportunities to engage with other learners?

Definitely! You’ll be able to engage with other learners through your cohort’s Slack channel—a platform where you can exchange ideas, ask questions, gain feedback or simply get to know one another. Once you have registered for E101 and completed the introductory survey, you will be placed into the Slack channel that best aligns with the interests you indicated in the survey.

How do I register for E101?

Make sure to include an email address that you check regularly, as email will be our primary mode of communication with you throughout the course. After you have registered, you will be prompted to complete a survey. Your answers will assist us in placing you into the appropriate Slack channel, so you can communicate with other members of your cohort.

What tools do I need to complete this course?

You will need access to the Internet, as well as a computer, tablet or smartphone. You will also need access to an email address that you use regularly. We recommend that you access the course using the latest version of the Google Chrome web browser, as it works best with our platform. If you do not have Google Chrome, you can download a free version here.

Am I eligible to register for this course if I don’t live in Canada?

Yes! E101 is available to anyone, anywhere—the core concepts are useful for all entrepreneurs. That being said, the course was designed specifically for Ontario-based technology entrepreneurs, therefore some of the material may not be applicable to your business idea. Please refer to our syllabus before registering to ensure that the course is a good fit for you.

Who is the instructor for E101?

Nathan Monk, a senior strategist for MaRS’ Information and Communications Technology sector, is the instructor for this course. Nathan is a lean-agile evangelist, mentor, digital strategist and growth hacker/marketer. He has worked with more than 200 startups as a champion of customer development and has expertise in business model generation, customer discovery and lean methodologies. He will guide you through the course, offering tips, definitions and genuine enthusiasm for entrepreneurship.

Throughout the course, you will also be offered a series of related videos and other content curated by the MaRS Entrepreneurship Program Team, containing insights from a variety of seasoned entrepreneurs and industry leaders.

Is this course relevant for my startup?

E101 is geared toward early-stage technology startups. However, many of the concepts we touch upon are relevant to startups across other industries and at other stages. Refer to the syllabus to see if the lessons are applicable to your industry and stage of growth.

Will the course be available after November 7?

The five-week E101 course will be offered four times throughout the year. Registration for each course will close after the first week to make sure that learners experience the curriculum together as a cohort. The course will not be available on demand. If you miss the registration period for the course beginning on November 7, stay tuned to register for the next course, which will be offered in early 2017. Am I eligible for a certificate?

Yes. Each learner who successfully completes the course will receive a non-accredited Certificate of Entrepreneurship issued by MaRS Discovery District.
