Our Results

Young, high-growth firms are critical job engines in the new economy. MaRS works with >1,200 promising young ventures, helping them bring their breakthrough products and services to national and international markets by giving them critical connections to capital, talent and customers. MaRS also provides them with market intelligence, advisory services and specialized entrepreneurship programs based on their stage of growth.

Venture Client Annual Survey – Methodology

The MaRS annual venture client survey was deployed March 15, 2018 and ran April 2018. Surveys were sent directly to and responded directly from ventures. Respondents were asked to report data for the one-year period ending December 31, 2017.

Unique survey links were sent by email to 1,152 ventures, with a total of 434 responses. The response rate of 38% is consistent with last year and is above average for web surveys; As per Survey Gizmo, the average response rate is 10-15% while phone surveys used for polling and consumer research are often at 10% or below.

In order to ensure annual results were comprehensive and accurate, results were augmented from a number of trusted, third-party data sources.

2016 Venture Client Annual Survey – Methodology

The 2016 survey was administered in two tranches. The first, by Deloitte Canada, was issued March 8, 2017 via email to MaRS clients. The second, by Data Catalyst, a distinct and separate business unit within MaRS on May 30, 2017 to non-respondents from the first tranche. In both cases, surveys were sent directly to and responded directly from ventures.

Respondents were asked to report data for the one-year period ending December 31, 2016.
 
At least one survey was sent by email to 1,152 ventures, with a total of 457 responses. The response rate of 38% is above average for web surveys; the typical range achieved by general-interest surveys and polling is 20-30%.
 
FluidSurveys (since acquired by SurveyMonkey) reports that 25% is the typical response rates for email surveys with >100 respondents, while phone surveys used for polling and consumer research are often at 10% or below.

2015 Venture Client Annual Survey – Methodology

The survey was administered by Data Catalyst, a distinct and separate business unit within MaRS which ensured that survey methodology best practices were adhered to and that surveys were sent directly to and responded directly from ventures.

The survey was sent by email to 1,120 ventures on March 29, 2016; the deadline to respond was April 21, 2016.

Respondents were asked to report data for the one-year period ending December 31, 2015.

The response rate of 51% is excellent for web surveys, far exceeding the typical 20-30% range achieved by general-interest surveys and polling.

FluidSurveys reports that 25% is the typical response rates for email surveys with >100 respondents, while phone surveys used for polling and consumer research are often at 10% or below.

The survey was administered by Data Catalyst, a distinct and separate business unit within MaRS which ensured that survey methodology best practices were adhered to and that surveys were sent directly to and responded directly from ventures.

The survey was sent by email to 1,265 ventures on March 9, 2015; the deadline to respond was April 16, 2015.

Respondents were asked to report data for the one-year period ending December 31, 2014.

The response rate of 52% is excellent for web surveys, far exceeding the typical 20-30% range achieved by general-interest surveys and polling.
